Do you know that the brain’s pineal gland produces an antioxidant hormone called melatonin during sleep? Its main responsibility is to control and maintain the body’s natural biorhythms”the body clock (or sleep-wake cycles). As one ages, melatonin levels decline.

Melatonin has also been found to reduce the incidence of headaches and can boost the immune function by stimulating and activating cancer-fighting cells to help stop malignancies from spreading.

Here’s a sleepy-time tonic:

1 glass of non-fat milk

In a blender, mix all the ingredients, and drink as warm beverage one hour before sleeping.

Melatonin is a neuro-hormone and must be taken at the lowest dose. Find the dose range effective for your body. You can start from 1mg and work your way upwards. Consult your doctor, of course.

Also, try practicing meditation or meditative prayer before sleeping. Simple things like releasing your stress with an after-dinner stroll, watching a happy movie (no violent horror flicks please!), chatting over the phone with a friend are easy regimens to follow.

Whatever you do, turn off all electronic gadgets and remove them from the sockets. Their electrical overflow still affects your energy and body, thus contributing to your interrupted sleep.

Warning: MSG (monosodium glutamate) has been shown to actually block the enzyme in the pineal gland that produces melatonin. Watch the MSG content of the food you’re eating.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome And Fibromyalgia | New Hope Available For Fibromyalgia And Chronic Fatigue Sufferers

Having been undiagnosed and a medical enigma for most of my adult life, I was eager to visit Abby’s Health Nutrition in Carrollwood to listen to Pam Ross last week.

Ross isa physician’s assistant who specialized in successfully treating chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia in patients for the last three years. She was on a speaking tour discussing her findings.

These syndromes, once misunderstood and oftentimes ignored, have only recently been recognized by the medical community as legitimate illnesses.

To hear those words from the mouth of a physician’s assistant was a validation that I had been seeking for over 15 years.

My story started like many other sufferers. I understand the definition of “going back to square one,” and I know what it’s like to be treated with harsh chemicals – Buspar for a Persistent Anxiety Disorder that you do not have and Prozac for a depression that you are not in.

I know, firsthand, the overwhelming frustration of knowing something was wrong with you, feeling just 50 percent, looking perfectly healthy on the outside and not knowing what was happening on the inside, wondering if your friends and even your family really believed you because ‘You looked fine,’ feeling with every year without answers, you were slowly losing your mind.

Chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia presents itself in a number of ways. Sufferers often have a laundry list of symptoms like anxiety, problems sleeping, irritable bowel syndrome, interstitial cystitis, flu-like symptoms, low grade fever or chills, neck pain, shortness of breath, unexplained chest pain, skin rashes, night sweats, headaches, TMJ, chemical sensitivities, depression, acid reflux, canker sores, thinking and memory issues called fibro fog, on top of chronic fatigue and widespread muscle and joint pain.

Because doctors could not understand it, it was easier to chemically medicate a potential problem than to deal with the real underlying one. But putting chemicals in the body of a fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome sufferers doesn’t make sense. With the medicine treatment advertised regularly on TV, the side effects often sound worse than living with the chronic illness.

Ross has taken years of listening to her clinic patients’ needs to create a natural antiviral supplement called Virasyl that is at the very heart of what preventing what might be the cause of the illness, a stealthy, insidious virus.

“It may be from a ‘hidden’ chronic viral infection ,” explained Ross. “Everyone has had a virus – whether it be chicken pox or a cold sore. Once you are exposed, it is with you for life. Seminar attendee Barbara Green took several notes while Ross spoke. She’d been dealing with a similar situation since she lost her job in 1989.

Said Green: “It took years for a diagnosis.”

Ross advised of an antiviral protocol that has worked for her patients with fibromyalgia.

“When you think it is a virus, stay away from nuts, citrus including orange juice, tomato juice and lemon water, soft drinks, artificial sweeteners, gluten in wheat products like bread and pasta, and drink only fresh, non-chlorinated water.”

Though two capsules daily of Virasyl was part of the antiviral regimen, she didn’t push her natural antiviral product, only told of the benefits available. “The product is a natural antiviral and a chelator, so the product will also gently pull out metals.”

Fibromyalgia Syndrome | How Can I Manage My Muscle Pain?

I have been suffering from fibromyalgia for some years. I’ve been prescribed l0mg of amitriptylline at night to relax the muscles, which helps somewhat. I am also having acupuncture and take a cocktail of vitamins. I have tried many alternative therapies but am now looking for a way to manage this in the long term. I don’t want to be taking medication for ever and would welcome any advice about diet, vitamins, lifestyle.

Answer:

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome, rather than a disease with a definite cause, which means that it is a condition characterised by a collection of symptoms which may or may not be related. Fibromyalgia means literally pain (algia) in the fibres (fibro) of the muscles (myos). The pain occurs in distinct areas, unlike the generalised aching muscles that you find with, san flu, chronic fatigue syndrome or calcium deficiency.

Massage therapists call the sore lumpy spots on the muscles ‘knots’, which they unravel by pressing and rubbing. Usually there is one knot per group of muscles.

Sometimes the pain spots are found in tendons and ligaments but these do not form knots as these tissues cant shrivel and roll up into a ball.

There are various pathways to fibromyalgia. Muscles that are repeatedly strained due to constant use (eg, during jogging, tennis, domestic chores) often get sore. This is primarily due to accumulation of a waste product called lactic acid. This occurs in the following way. Normally the energy you need to contract muscles is released when glucose burns with oxygen to product carbon dioxide and water in the muscles. But if the muscles overwork the oxygen supply from the heart and lungs cannot speed up enough to match the demand. The result is that the glucose is not fully oxidised and, together with the limited oxygen supply, forms lactic acid. It’s this that makes muscles cramp. You will have seen marathon runners brought to a halt because of this. After rest and massage, the oxygen supply is restored, the lumps and cramps disappear and the pain fades away.

Slow’ strenuous work, such as carrying, lifting or long hours at a computer can also be a culprit triggering prolonged accumulation of lactic acid and muscle spasm. Lactic acid also causes inflammation in these muscles. In defense, the body deposits fibrous tissue in the sore areas, to harden them so that the muscles can function again. Bug although the area is encased in scar tissue, the inflammation remains, and when the area is touched or moved, it hurts. When you’re resting however, with nothing pressing on the sore spots, there’s no pain.

People who do desk jobs, or have bad posture, usually have sore spots on top of the shoulder blades (on the trapezius muscle). Fibromyalgia also occurs wherever muscles are likely to suffer repetitive strain injury, including the buttocks, lower back calves, biceps, hands and wrists.

Conventional medicine focuses on managing the pain of fibromyalgia with painkillers, steroidal drugs and antidepressants. My approach is directed towards reducing the inflammation through diet and massaging with oil to ease the sore spots by improving blood flow to the area. Stress should be avoided because it often provokes insomnia and the pain threshold is then lowered.

These are my suggestions

* Good things to eat include turmeric, ginger, chicken broth and marrowbone soup.

* Avoid citrus or acidic fruit, including oranges, grapefruits, lemons, pineapples, kiwis, mangoes and excessive amounts of summer berries: they slow the healing of inflammation and the pain actually increases.

* Control stomach acid by avoiding hot, spicy and deep-fried foods, nuts, white wine, champagne, brandy, neat spirits, vinegar, canned products using citric acid as a preservative, and more than 500g vitamin C daily.

* It is important to avoid being constipated as it impairs calcium absorption in the colon: calcium deficiency can cause muscular spasm and subsequent pain. Drink one and a half to two liters of still, pure water daily, and, if constipation is a problem, take Qurs Mullayan : one at bedtime for two months.

* Ease inflammation with my formulation of herbal oils, Joint Oil. Find the sore spots and massage them with a little oil until it is absorbed. Do this daily for a month. lf you cant reach the area, ask a partner or friend to do it.

* Practise therapeutic Iyengar yoga, to stretch the muscles and relax you. The most useful postures for the spine, where the pain is usually located, are the cobra, semi bridge and boat. If you are practising at home, always remember to warm up first.

New Treatment for Fibromyalgia | Fibromyalgia, its signs, symptoms and treatment

Fibromyalgia syndrome is a common disorder characterized by chronic, widespread muscle pain, fatigue and multiple tender points. The word fibromyalgia comes from the Latin term for fibrous tissue (fibro) and the Greek for muscle (myo) and pain (algia). Widespread muscle and joint pain over three months (such as pain, stiffness and pain in joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments). The pain may appear in one or more places at the same time and in different parts of the body. The pain is bilateral in that appears above and below the waist. The pain is located within the muscles themselves, as well as the points where ligaments connect muscle to bone.

Besides pain, other symptoms include extreme fatigue, sleeplessness, headaches and depression. Although fatal or permanently damaging, FMS is so debilitating, that has a profound effect on families, friends and employers of the sick. Fibromyalgia Treatment Options

Medications that increase the level of your body 's of serotonin and norepinephrine (neurotransmitters that modulate sleep, pain and immune system function) are commonly prescribed in small doses for the treatment of fibromyalgia. Examples include amitriptyline, cyclobenzaprine and Cymbalta.

Ultram may help with the pain of fibromyalgia, although stronger opioids may be necessary to treat moderate to severe pain.

A clean diet will exclude coffee, red meat, processed foods? And other digestible foods difficult, but include a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. Vitamin supplements are also useful. Ginger, ginseng, ginkgo biloba and garlic are also helpful.

One of the exercises' s the day will include various forms of aerobic exercise with heart rate to obtain a good level for 20 minutes or more.

Chicago – The line now forms before 4 p.m. to get into REST Shelter — a respite from Chicago’s streets for those with no place else to go.

Once a 24-hour homeless shelter for more than 100 people, the facility in a dingy old church has had to lay off workers and close during the day as legislators chopped the Department of Human Services budget by hundreds of millions of dollars, including $4.7 million for homeless services.

The result is that many of the state’s poorest and most vulnerable — REST residents include recovering addicts and the disabled — are left with fewer options and more uncertainty even as census data shows Illinois grappling with its highest poverty rate in nearly two decades as the jobless rate rises.

“It’s the programs that serve people who are the most vulnerable that are being hit the hardest,” said Eithne McMenamin, associate director of the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless. “That’s only going to exacerbate the problem.”

Mirroring financial problems for shelters across the state, REST lost $100,000 in state funds this year, which translated into a cut of around 10 positions — mostly minimum wage jobs. It also means the doors are closed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., a time when residents used to meet with caseworkers or just get away from the elements.

That means resident Heather McGuire, who has chronic back pain, takes fibromyalgia medication and walks with a cane even for short distances, has to find a place to go during the day. So far, the 38-year-old, who has no income, has spent some days at a women’s center, but weekends are difficult.

When legislators meet next month, they may decide to shift some of the money around. But Gov. Pat Quinn‘s administration says the state took a step backward in its safety net services.

“The governor is looking strategically to reallocate resources through the General Assembly,” said Toni Irving, deputy chief of staff. “It’s a difficult situation. You have a grocery list that has $40 worth of things on it and you’ve been given $10.”

Irving is co-chair of the Illinois Commission on the Elimination of Poverty. The group’s goal is to reduce the number of those living in extreme poverty in half by 2015, but it laid out its fears in a report this month that the state could go in the other direction.

“This year we saw devastating state budget cuts and a lack of real solutions for individuals and families experiencing extreme poverty,” the report said. “Illinois can expect to see deepening hardship, further entrenchment of social problems, and movement away from the achievable goal of cutting extreme poverty in half.”

The latest census figures show a state poverty rate of 14.1 percent — about 1.8 million of Illinois’ 12.8 million residents.

It’s the highest rate since 1992, when it was 15.6 percent, and has been climbing steadily for three years. Poverty is defined as a family that survives on around $22,000 annually. Extreme poverty is half that amount.

The use of food stamps — another measure of poverty — has nearly doubled in some parts of Illinois with experts saying many recipients are formerly middle class residents. In 2006, an average of 1.2 million people each month relied on the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program; earlier this year the monthly average was closer to 1.8 million people.

Calls to the hunger hot line at the Illinois Hunger Coalition have skyrocketed. In August 2007, there were around 300 calls from people seeking help or guidance in getting food. In August of this year, it was more than 1,000 calls.

“People are calling and they’re just sobbing,” said the coalition’s executive director, Diane Doherty. She said many of the calls are coming from area codes they haven’t received calls from before.

All of the residents at REST — which provides meals, transitional housing and emergency beds– are in poverty, said executive director Kathleen Ahler, if not extreme poverty. And the prospects of things improving look grim.

“Our ability to help people to get off the street is definitely impaired,” she said. “If you can’t keep people healthy and safe and stable as far as they know they have a place to be, it’s very difficult for them to overcome their employment barriers. It’s nearly impossible.”
